Three Worlds: Life, Death & The Otherplace

Fenrayne

Gildland

Gildland stretches from The Teeth and Volk in the south, to Eradu in the north. Its western border is the Eastern Spine Mountains.

The Seven Towers of Gilder stand glimmering in the summer sun. From the tops of them you can see all the way across the Slice. The towers radiate out from the central hub of the royal palace, where the Ever-Young Prince resides. No civilian is permitted to enter the palace.

Once every seven years the Prince emerges from the palace to greet his people. From the perspective of the people, his highness, standing atop his balcony, never seems to age. The Ever-Young Prince has ruled Gildland for centuries.

The Iron Tower

The Iron Tower stands as a bastion of peace and the light on the northern border of Gildland. The Fellowship of the Seven Rivers patrol the forests and roadways, keeping the peace and the dead in their graves. The dead have been rising within the southlands at an alarming rate. There have been rumors that the Fellowship has had to burn entire towns down to send the recently risen back to death.

The Tower sits at the forefront of practical and magical applications against the rising dead.

Volk

Volk is a large island on the southern coast of Gildland. There are two ports on Volk, one major and one minor.

The major port is where the island gets its name. The town of Volk sits on the eastern coast of the island with cliffs on the north and east side. The docks lie to the south along with a small district of warehouses. Small, colorful houses and businesses dot the hillside up toward the cliff. On the easternmost cliff lies the long-abandoned Belmin house. Small farms dot the countryside to the west of the town but peter out after a few miles. In the history of Fenrayne, Volk is fairly new. The small trading hub popped up only fifty years ago and has been growing since. With the near-constant growth and periodic winter storms, construction companies always have work in Volk.

The center of Volk is mountainous, with a single road leading through the mountains. Few live here and those who do are hardy folk. The mountains are treacherous and high. A small group of Stonefolk call the southwestern village of Tallcliff home.

On the western side of Volk stands the small town of Bastilla. Sitting at the foot of the mountains and surrounded by forests, Bastilla does most of its commerce by fishing the local shoals and pottery made from local clay deposits. The iron-rich clay gives Bastillan pottery a distinct red color unlike any other found in Gildland.

Longvale

Named for their red wood and antler-like branches, the Hartwood forests of Longvale tower over the landscape. The trees grow to enormous heights, some growing to almost 300 feet with diameters of 30 feet. Stories say the oldest groves were once protected by the magic of ancient beings who lived in these forests. If they ever existed, these protectors have long-since vanished. Now, the Hartwoods are harvested for lumber by the local Onza population and shipped off to other areas of Fenrayne for home and shipbuilding.

Legends tell of old Hartwoods giving their amber to worthy travelers. Hartwood Amber is said to connect the holder to powerful magic.

Death

Life and Death are two sides of the same coin. Since the beginning of time, they have been inseparable. There cannot be one without the other. Just as you walk around, living in Life, if you know the right passageways, you can walk around in Death as well.

Death flows like a river. As spirits pass into Death, they find themselves moving along its swift currents. Most float along, awaiting their final moments at The Cascade. Some, still thirsty for life, hold fast in the waters as more and more of their true selves are sapped away by the cold water. And others become trapped by wicked Necromancers, who force them back into Life to do their bidding.

The Otherplace

You can get to the Otherplace from Life

You can get to the Otherplace from Death

The Otherplace will exist after the end of time

The Otherplace is not Life

The Otherplace is not Death

The Otherplace existed before the dawn of the universe
